Self-signed certificate

A self-signed certificate is a certificate that has been signed by the issuer itself and not by a Certification Authority (CA).

Because there is no path to a trusted root CA, browsers (clients) will only trust such a certificate if it has been explicitly marked as trusted by the browser (client). This is usually done by adding the certificate to a certificate store in the browser (client).
