Self-signed certificate
A self-signed certificate is a certificate that has been signed by the issuer itself and not by a Certificate Authority (CA).
Due to the missing path to a trusted root CA, browsers (clients) only trust these certificates if they have been explicitly defined as trustworthy in the browser (client). This is normally done by adding the certificate to a certificate store of the browser (client).
